There was a story in the NY Times recently about Millennials who are embracing Bicentennial style, which I found kind of funny considering that the general birth date range for Millenials is usually considered between 1981 and 1996, so they didn’t even experience the Bicentennial firsthand.
Coming from my perspective as a Gen X’er, this article made me look back at pictures of my childhood bedroom, circa 1976, and as you can see in the pictures here, I had some pretty serious Bicentennial wallpaper, with Revolutionary War figures and the slogan “America Freedom.” On a side note, that Hank Aaron poster was also from the 1970s, commemorating him breaking Babe Ruth’s home run record in 1974.
Here’s another look at details of the Bicentennial wallpaper:
While this next picture doesn’t relate to Bicentennial home decor, it captures of a glimpse of Bicentennial fever as evidenced in 1976. This picture was from a “block party” in our neighborhood during the summer of 1976, with three neighbors dressed up in their finest American Colonial attire.
I’m not sure that I’m in any mood to revive any Bicentennial style in my own home, but a look back at that awesome wallpaper from my childhood gave me some perspective on my parents’ home decorating style at the time.
