When I am in New York City and walking around, I tend to see things that grab my attention in unlikely places, whether it’s on the sidewalk, on the back of a sign, the possibilities for creative finds are endless – like this leaf and muffin wrapper that looks like a flower. I was walking around and seeing art gallery shows in Chelsea when I noticed this torn-out and folded comic book page (above), with a cartoon bug apparently screaming for his life.
I also tend to notice wet spots on the sidewalk, that almost take on the appearance of Rorshach art tests. Below are a pair that I noticed in the same general area of the west 20s. If you look closely, what do you see? Anything? I see a hunched-over laughing man below left, and a guy reaching out with his hand in the image below right. Granted, the one below right is a bit more of a stretch, but there’s something about the upright line and the circular head-like shape on top that gives me thoughts of a human figure. I know, I’m seeing things!
I think the image at left could make for some fine abstract art, it kind of reminds me of an Adolph Gottlieb painting.
