No green thumb here, but I have a solution

As you can see in the picture above, I don’t seem to do very well when it comes to growing or maintaining healthy plants. These two succulents have seen better days, and should probably be retired to the compost heap, but I still have them around. I’m not sure how this happened, I’ve had success in the past with African Violets, orchids, and other plants, and have good southern exposure for sunlight and give water as needed, yet it’s gotten to the point where I can’t even keep a cactus (or other succulent) alive or thriving for very long.

Back in January, as I was walking around Chelsea in NYC, I saw these flowers on the curbside structure for outdoor dining at a local restaurant and thought they were beautiful – and quite convincing, despite being fake oriental poppies. I was tempted to contact the restaurant owner to ask where they got them, as I would buy some if I could find some just like these.

I never got around to contacting the restaurant, but the thought was firmly planted in my mind (excuse the unintended pun) to search out some fake flowers for my home. Let’s take another look at the same collection of flowers at that location in New York City – don’t you think these look great?

At any rate, I found myself in a Michael’s Arts and Crafts store today, and they had a collection of fake flowers on sale for 60% off. I thought that this might be a good way to dip my toes in the water of fake flowers, so to speak … I could get a few bunches, and spent only about $10 for what I have here below. If I were to compare them to the fake flowers above, I’d give the Chelsea fakes a strong A grade, and maybe these Michael’s flowers a B+, but for ten bucks, I think the burst of color – especially when seen from across the room, is a pleasant thing to have.
